The Financial Inclusion Advocacy Centre’s Technical Assistance Department includes many of the leading international trainers in microfinance, as well as a strong group of trainers and consultants from other technical units who provide supporting expertise, as needed. Trainers are certified in the full range of CGAP and World Bank microfinance trainings, as well as Citibank Foundation training materials in English.
FIAC’s Research and Innovations Department works to address critical developmental needs of the African microfinance sector by conducting research and developing and propagating new technical materials on microfinance innovations. The Department conducts authentic socio economic market research in microfinance on behalf of Micro finance investment vehicles, MFIs, donor agencies, governments and other parties.
FIAC performs specialized MFI appraisals and ratings – using The MIR rating tool – on behalf of MFIs, donors, investors, and governments. These services provide independent expert evaluation and verification of individual MFI performance, based on international microfinance best practice and country specific commercial banking reporting norms.
The Sub-Saharan microfinance sector is one of the largest in the world, encompassing over 1,000,000 institutions, including community banks, rural banks, cooperatives and credit unions. Despite the scale, more 70% of the adult population in Sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to financial services, mainly in rural areas and urban slums.
The Financial Inclusion Centre’s mission is to build the institutional strength and outreach of the microfinance sector, by providing a full range of high-quality, best-practice technical inputs and support to all industry stakeholders, in a sustainable and demand-driven manner. As an independent support centre, FIAC is committed to promoting innovations, transparency and increased outreach to the poor and ever-improving performance in the microfinance industry.
The Financial Inclusion Advocacy Centre currently has a growing staff of over 25 microfinance professionals, working out of head office in Kent, UK and its West African office in Accra, Ghana. FIAC staff has a strong commitment to its mission, bringing a blend of private, public and non-profit sector experience. FIAC staff includes former commercial bankers from Goldman Sacs, World Bank, UNDP and others, as well as auditors, investment analysts and business development specialists and from Price Waterhouse, Ernst & Young, and KPMG. FIAC staff includes a leading group of microfinance practitioners and sector leaders from the industry. Staff members have wide national and international microfinance experience, including background in Islamic banking.
